Céline Barreau – Director of Lower School at Danceworks Ballet Academy
Céline started her dance training at the age of 8 with Kim White at Ballet Riviera in Vevey, Switzerland. She performed lead roles in ballets such as Peter Pan, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and The Nutcracker. In 2012, she went on to study Neuroscience and Behaviour (BA) at Mount Holyoke College where she continued to perform in ballet, contemporary ballet, and contemporary pieces in the Five College Dance Department. During college, Céline had the honour of working with such notable choreographers as Kinsun Chan, Rodger Blum, Zoe Henrot, and Tong Wang. Céline was selected to perform in Jennifer Hart’s Before/After at the Kennedy Center as well as Thomas Vacanti’s Interludium in Brooklyn, New York, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Upon her return to Europe, Céline’s interests further evolved to improvisation with workshops by Miri Lee, Katie Duck, Ivan Perez, and Bryan Arias exploring instant composition and performance art. In 2017, Céline attended the Nuova Officina della Danza’s International Contemporary Dance Program on scholarship in Torino, Italy, where she continued her research in movement vocabulary as well as improvisation and performance qualities through the styles of Hofesh, Gaga, Ultima Vez, Flying Low, Inside Out, and Countertechnique. At the same time, Céline collaborated with the internationally renowned Dutch visual and material artist Jennifer Tee, poet Jane Lewty, and dance artists Miri Lee and David Kam to create PIECE RESISTANCE, a new body of work inspired by recent political upheaval and corresponding acts of resistance. Céline has been working at Danceworks Ballet Academy in London as a teacher, assistant director, and guest choreographer.
Céline is taking a year long sabbatical to research in Gaga movement language while developing as a Gaga teacher in Tel Aviv, Israel. Gaga was developed by the current director of Batsheva Dance Company, Ohad Naharin and has benefits to dancers that have seen widespread demand. There are two main tracks: Gaga/people and Gaga/dancers. Céline will come back to guest teach at the Academy throughout the 2019-2020 year and will return to London to rejoin fully in the 2020-2021 Academic year.
