Originally from New Zealand, Liz won a scholarship to the Australian School of Ballet where she was awarded a further scholarship to study at the Royal Ballet School in 1971. At 17 she graduated into the Royal Ballet Company, Covent Garden and performed in all the major classics including new works by Kenneth MacMillan. She has also performed as a soloist with Ballet For All UK and the New Zealand Ballet.

In 1991 she completed the Professional Dancers’ Teacher’s Course, graduating with distinction. Since then she has taught for some of the leading dance establishments in the UK and abroad. These include: Central School of Ballet where she taught 1st year girls classical as well as running their Pre Senior Programme. Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, where she taught 2nd and 3rd year students and was Rehearsal Director for student choreography. Elmhurst School and Arts Educational Tring Park where she guest taught senior students. The Royal Ballet School’s Junior Associate Programme. The Royal Opera House Education Department where she taught on numerous study days and was Administrator and main teacher for the ‘Chance to Dance’ programme (1996-99), the Royal Ballet’s scholarship scheme for talented young dancers. In 1999 she was invited to teach for the Showa Academia Musicae (Japan), a two year Ballet Programme established by Sir Peter Wright (former Director of the Royal Ballet). As principal teacher for the Showa Academia she produced Graduate Showcases including Raymonda Act 3, Swan Lake Act 3 and La Bayadere Act 2 (RB versions). She is a regular guest teacher on summer courses abroad including Italy, Iceland, Singapore, Japan and New Zealand.

Liz is currently teaching on the Undergraduate Programme at Trinity Laban teaching BA3 students Classical Technique and Ballet Performance option. She is also a guest teacher on the MA Programme for Transitions, Taviziva Dance, Amp and regularly coaches both professional dancers and students in a private capacity.

Class Description

Liz delivers a dynamically diverse class with excellent musicians such as Bill Lawrence, John Sweeney, Anna Gillespie, Cyrus Gabrysh and others. The broad range of musical accompaniment helps to stimulate musical responsiveness, use of rhythm and dynamic range. Although not suitable for beginners the class embodies the fundamental principles of classical technique together with a growing awareness of emerging artistry. Liz has taught ballet to contemporary dancers’ for many years and helps dancers explore the use of space, verticality, weight and breath offering a class that both motivates and moves.
