Contemporary and Stretch for Dance with Stuart Thomas
Stuart has been inspired by and explored how Martial Arts and dance integrate for over 20 years. He is a teacher of Contemporary Dance as well as second generation Soul Jazz and his teaching follows the road of ‘old school’ to progressive styles, creating his own unique style of Martial Dance Fusion.A London native, Stuart began his formal dance career with Union Dance Company. He was intuitively drawn into dance upon discovering that its focus on strength and grace in movement helped him decipher the anatomical machinations of the body.In his twenties he embarked upon a journey to train in Tai Chi, which culminated in his earning a rank of Group A Instructor from the Canton Martial Committee. He often travels between London and South China to enhance his knowledge of the technique. Stuart is now also a highly sought after instructor of Dance and Tai Chi fist – two of the most practiced Martial Arts and Dance forms and is a specialist in Graham-based technique. He has danced and taught in the UK, Europe and the US and also performs in theatrical dance pieces.
Stuarts Masterclasses will alternate weekly between Contemporary and Stretch for Dance.
“….What you do on the floor, you do standing; what you do standing, you do in the air…” (William Louther)
From William Louther’s repertoire of Contemporary dance to an introduction to the Martha Graham style and technique. The elements of floor work will energize and strengthen your body through breathing and will prepare you to move with the best of yourself through contraction and release, spiralling and learning how to shift your weight. .
This course is for anyone interested in contemporary dance, whether you’re an experienced dancer or have simply taken up a new hobby during lockdown. Classes are informal yet focused. We will start on the floor, preparing our bodies to move to a standing position and then transfer this knowledge to understand how movements work in the air. Benefits of the course include improved awareness, posture, breathing, flexibility and body conditioning. In the course, we will cover the following items, which students can then practice at home by themselves:
- Hip openings
- Contraction and release
- Spiralling the core
- The foundations of standing splits
- Breathing exercises
- Standing balance exercises
- Carriage of the arms
- Coccyx balances
- Core strengthening exercises
